Looks like you can go shopping again!!!!!

But before you hit the mall running, let’s talk about the 10 top things I as a personal shopper consider for my clients to get them the best bang for their bucks.

And how those 10 things ensure success each and every time we go shopping with lot’s of happy purchases, the clients just love.

I mean let’s face it, who wants to employ a personal shopper and come home with nothing or worse still come home with things you’re still not happy with and will never wear?

You’re quiet good at that yourself that’s why you may need a personal shopper.  

A personal shopping experience is meant to be something you could not do on your own. Right? Or at least an experience that helps you to shop better in the future.  

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM A PERSONAL SHOPPER.

What are the 10 most important things I consider when shopping with my clients.

1. YOUR COLOURS.

THE most important, necessary, mandatory thing I consider is the colours that suit the client. I WOULD SAY COLOUR IS 80% OF THE STYLE EQUATION. The difference between wearing the wrong colour outfit and the right colour outfit is ridiculous.

I cannot stress how important the colour component of your wardrobe is if you want to look your best.

Why do I say that? Because most women are not reaching their true image potential and it’s always because they can improve when it comes to wearing the right colours.

Unless you have had a correct colour analysis with accurate colour swatches you will have clothes in your wardrobe in the wrong colours. It always happens. And when the client clears the wrong colours out, they and their wardrobe change, dramatically.

2. YOUR WEIGHT

 Gained a few kilos lately? Or has your body shape changed? Body changes are a fact of life and a really important thing to factor in when you dress and when choosing styles that are the most suitable for you to wear.

 Women over 40 especially may notice a few extra bumps and lumps. Your weight determines which styles suit your body.

 Have you noticed when you lose just 5 kilos, how much better an outfit will look?

 3. YOUR AGE

“Mutton dressed up as lamb”, is something most mature women don’t want to be. So how to dress appropriately? One major mistake women make is showing too much skin. They forgot to look in the mirror and realise their once taut and toned arms and legs are no longer. That’s why we have things like knee length dresses and not mini’s.  4. YOUR SIZE

This one is pretty obvious. I am not going to dress a 60 year old woman that is a size 20 in the same styles as a 60 year old woman that’s a size 8.

A smaller frame will look much neater in her dress. Now being a size 8 is just a pipe dream for most of us, so best to know that we can find styles to flatter every shape and size. It’s all about knowing what designs of clothing are your best option.

5. YOUR HEIGHT

Style is all about proportion as well. You may be a short stout rectangle or a tall pencil thin rectangle and in the case of a shorter larger frame woman, you could almost be a square shape.

Obviously the style of dress for a taller slimmer woman is not the style of dress for a shorter fuller shape woman with maybe a very full bust. It’s great that dressing your shape can give the illusion of a more balanced frame, and there are style for every shape and size.

6. YOUR PROPORTIONS

 As mentioned with height, style is about providing a balanced well-proportioned look. Think about width of shoulders, bust size, hip size, leg length, neck length etc all the body measurements that make up your proportions play a role in your style summary.

7. YOUR STYLE PERSONALITY

 I may have 2 women of the same age, size, height, weight and colours but I will dress them in completely different outfits. One woman may be quiet and sophisticated in nature, the other woman playful and outlandish. I will let the clothing match the character.

8. THE BUDGET

 I love budget shopping. I really get a kick out of looking fabulous for a few dollars. I’m that one when I get a compliment to say. “Oh and these earrings only cost me $3.

It’s amazing, how knowing your colours can help you put the whole look together and can be a really fun adventure of finding those cute and edgy little bargains that make “your signature style” so unique.

9. YOUR CURRENT WARDROBE.

 Going shopping? No. Hang on a minute. Before you go anywhere, take a look at what’s in your wardrobe first.

You can revamp an existing wardrobe if you’ve been diligent to cull the wrong colours first. Last seasons outfits become “new” again if you see them with fresh eyes when the calendar ticks over. If your wardrobe has ONLY the right colours, creating lots of outfits becomes easy.

Grab a belt, put that outfit with boots. Try a different cardi or jacket over the top. Cinch the waist in, let the shirt out, roll the sleeves up, turn the collar down. The main thing is get creative. Try a new hairstyle. Add a different statement piece of jewellery to make the outfit brand new. You’re only limited by your imagination.

10. Last and final tip. YOUR ACCEPTANCE TO CHANGE.

This last tip is a big one. You’re so used to seeing yourself a particular way and your impression of yourself is very strong. Some people love change and some people will oppose it with every fiber in their body. Which type are you? Be aware of that whenever you make any real changes in your life.

If you’re a resister, take it easy. Be kind to yourself. Make gradual changes you can live with and love and then tackle the next change. If you don’t change you’ll stay the same and who wants that?

Cull your wardrobe with your colour swatch

Lock down has made many of us very industrious. It’s given us time at home. Space to breathe and time to think about making some good changes. Those good changes can certainly be put to good use in the area of our wardrobe and what we’re wearing.

Lots of women are also finding themselves in a place where their budget is not as healthy as it once was. And also finding themselves home more often than not and needing less outfits than before.

We may be desirous not to waste so much money on throw away fashion, or save on the environment. How many thousands of dollars have you spent on fashion over the years?

It’s interesting how lock down has us thinking of what really matters. Having a wardrobe jammed packed with clothes we never wear is one of those things that just don’t matter.

And having a good clean up? I have just cleaned every room in my house so my wardrobe is next. There will be things to give away and things to post on e-bay, so it will be recycle style and not land fill.  There’s a desire to buy much less than before.

Use your seasonal colour swatch to cull your wardrobe

Wearing your colours is the best way to look your best all the time. Especially as you mature. Lots of women reading this blog have had their colours done. Some of those women may have the wrong diagnosis, some may know a little about their colours and some know their colours well.

The women who know their colours well and how to use their colour swatch efficiently will get the best results with their image and be able to have a functional stylish wardrobe happening all the time.

WHY YOU CANNOT CULL WITHOUT YOUR COLOURS.

As a colour consultant, the first thing I do when I cull a clients’ wardrobe is remove all the WRONG colours.

It’s a little difficult to remove the wrong colours when you don’t know your right colours.

Over the years I have met countless women who have had a misdiagnoses with their colours or have a swatch full of the wrong colours.

Dial up your style for Spring in your Colours

We all can agree we could do with a little LIFT at the moment.

Top to toe-start with your hair

Women are complaining about their hair. It's looking like a disaster, and a girl cannot feel herself whilst her hair is a total wreck.

Here are my quick tips to see you through til help arrives.

I am no hairdresser, but I do colour my own hair from time to time. Desperate times call for desperate measures and if you need to colour your own hair, there are many supermarket products that work a treat. 

Just doing your skunk part can make all the difference. You will feel semi human again!! So what colour should you use to be on the safe side?

My tips on colour. If you are very fair always look for a cool blonde or very light brown colour.

If you are mid brown go for a light brown colour

If you are black go for a mid brown colour.

This will get you through until you can get to the hairdressers again.

I'm sure your hairdresser will love to see you once lockdown is over, so let's remember to support them when we can.

Self care

There's no excuse for us really not to do those things like paint our nails, defuzz and exfoliate our legs.

I'm about to give myself a good spring clean up and especially hydrate and moisturize and exfoliate my super dry legs. Mature skin needs all the help it can get, and dryness is a real issue.

10 Capsule Wardrobe Basics for Spring

Whether you're  shopping your wardrobe or purchasing clothes online, starting with the right basics will be a great way to get a Spring wardrobe together.

One you will just love.

So what are my top 10 must have's for you as we move into the warmer months?

The Must nots

Before we speak of the must haves, let's talk about the must nots. 

I always say "fashion is often about not what to wear, as much as what to wear",

Many stylists will claim every wardrobe starts with the LBD (little black dress), a pair of black jeans, black pants and a white top, just to name a few.

But sadly this is not a good place to start if you're looking for ageless style. MATURE women have special needs when it comes to style.

This approach has caused mature women a lot of grief and confusion when it comes to looking great and having a really workable wardrobe.

One of the main reasons why you could be struggling with your wardrobe is you are starting with black and white as your basics. 

Black and white are not everyone's basics.

Your seasonal colours are your basics and getting started with your basic neutrals is the way to go.

Your first step is your colour swatch

Armed with your seasonal colour swatch and an idea of all the neutrals in your seasonal swatch is the starting point to your wardrobe.

So here are some top tips to basics I love to use for my clients for an amazing transformation.

My 10 must-haves for Spring

My absolute must have number 1 is my light off white jeans. I wear them everywhere and every way. Casual, dressy and everything in between.

Must have no 2 is the washed denim jean. Always, always a staple for every wardrobe.

Not too tight, not too loose, just right . This jean goes with everything is always stylish, effortless and cool. 

Staple no 3. The linen/off white/light shirt. Know that a shirt maker suits all ages, all style of women and all shapes as well. Nothing is more elegant than a linen shirt.

My staple no 4. The denim jacket. The humble denim jacket has been around since Levi's were invented and what a wonderfully versatile and stylish piece of equipment it is.

Again this jacket suits all ages, shapes and sizes. Dress it up and dress it down and for those cool nights in Spring what better cover up can you have?

My elegant staple no 5. The beautiful colourful top. Nothing makes me more happy than to don a beautiful colourful shirt/blouse/top when the mercury starts to rise.

Adding a stunningly stylish top brings your sense of individuality and style into play.

If you want to wear sleeveless you can, or if not go for a little sleeve or a sheer long sleeve lightweight fabric top to make your style statement.

Staple no 6. The lightweight coloured or neutral shade pant.

The occasion may call for something more dressy than jeans, so a beautifully tailored cotton or even a very lightweight woollen or linen pant is just the thing.

Remember you have a multitude of neutrals to choose from as well as all the other colours in your palette. Did you know for example, lemon goes with hundreds of other colours?

Staple no 7. You're not going anywhere without that sombrero. Hat's add so much flavour to your outfit and be sure to choose something that makes a statement.

It's another piece that works towards your total look and there are so many creatively interesting  hats to choose from.

Staple no 8 You're shoe statement. I am aware that not all mature women feel comfortable in heels but if you are please let them scream style.

Think of all the women you know that are known by the shoes they wear.

And if you're not that lady that loves shoes or thinks that shoes are only made for walking then try and be as stylish as possible in the right colours at least.

You can always find a funky flat sandal for spring or a fashionable comfortable flat.

Staple no 8. You're sunnies. What an excuse to add another stylish layer to your look.

Sunnies not only look great, they cover the eyes giving a more youthful appearance and also protect our eyes in the bargain so use this benefit all you can.

Glasses aren't just for seeing. They are to be seen.

Please please be sure they are in your colours. It makes all the difference to your look and also to your whole outfit. Please, please avoid black. They obliterate your face.

Staple no 9 A lovely lightweight jacket. Such a versatile piece. Have it long, short, mid length, lightweight, structured, loose, fitted,  sheer, plain coloured, printed, striped. So many options according to the outfit and the occasion.

Your staple no 10. Whether it's Vuitton, Boho or Faux a stylish bag completes your Spring look.

Just a few things to consider. Choose the right colour. Choose the right shape. Choose the right style for your outfit and choose the right size for your body and also for the balance of your outfit.

5 Steps for your Spring Cull

The suns' shining, the bees are buzzing.  Spring is just around the corner and now is the time to cull, clean and motivate for the warmer months. Time to throw off the winter garb and get into your lovely colourful outfits." I hope you never got out of your colourful outfits."

5 easy steps to Culling.

1. Remove all the wrong colours. This step is critical to looking your best. Have you had your colours done? Do you know how to choose your colours well?

Always start with your colour analysis.

2. Remove all the old clothes. Isn't it amazing just how long we hang on to clothes we think we will wear again "one day" ?

Seriously!!! There are only so many days in a year. So many outings (or not) and just so many clothes we can get on our back at one time. You know the saying. Most of us wear 20% of our clothes 80% of the time. Now we are probably wearing 5% of our clothes, 100% of the time.

3. Remove all the clothes that no longer fit. How long have you been on that diet? And how long have you been trying to get into those jeans you wore when you were 25? Now I don't want to say forget it, cause I am always the eternal optimist and I always believe in being fit and healthy and not to just allow those extra kilos to take over, but we have to be realistic.

Our bodies change, our bodies change (a lot) as we mature so find some garments that fit well and are flattering for your age.

4. Remove all the inappropriate outfits. Time to get rid of your bickie jacket, your silver bikini, your spangled evening dress and your Jean Shrimpton minis. Those days are over. While you're at it get rid of all the clothes that you never wore because you know they "just didn't suit you" Ask about my list for appropriate style

5. My 5th and final tip to having a successful cull is remove all the bulk.

Seriously how many pairs of the one colour pant can you wear? Or for that matter how many pairs of pants can you wear in general? So if you find you have 1,199 pair of jeans please donate some to those in need.

So now you have a nice clean wardrobe.

Seriously I love taking my clients shopping, because success lies in wearing the right colours.

Retail being what it is gives us many places to go. Shop in store, shop online, shop overseas labels online, shop brands, shop sales, shop vintage, shop, shop, shop.

Hang on a minute. Before you step out the door, or shop online, get sensible and check out your existing wardobe first.

It's ridiculous buying another pair of pants, when you already have 10 perfectly good pair in your colours in your closet. Or another pair of jeans when you already have 5 suitable pair.

Sort out what you have, make an inventory, consider what is NEEDED in your wardrobe and make a targeted effort toward that garment. This is how you can make your wardrobe more functional, fun and interesting. Nothing worse than a wardrobe full of snap buys you never wear.

My 5 top tips to budget shopping.

So there you have it.

Tip 1. Get your colours done first. Either in person with my colour and style analysis or my online course.

Tip 2. Show your wardrobe first. What is good, what needs to go so you will know what to start with

Tip 3. Make a budget for the quarter, so you do not spend $$$$ you do not have.

Tip 4. Make a list of what you really want or need.

Tip 5. Look at the tried and true labels that fit and are not complete rubbish. The ones you have tried before and are happy with the quality, even though they are budget.

Tip 6. Shop with discernment. Don't just buy on a whim. Look carefully and consider "is this really what  I want or need"

How to choose a winter coat

A winter coat is a great staple so we all need a coat/jacket or two for the cooler months.

The great thing about having a stylish cosy winter jacket is you can almost have a trans seasonal wardrobe. Wear your lovely silk shirts and stylish jeans and keep warm enough with your coat.

A good jacket is usually a substantial investment so be sure to make a wise purchase.  

Top 5 tips to choosing the perfect winter jacket.

Always choose the right colour

I know a lot of women just settle for a black coat thinking it goes with everything. But this is not the case.

Once you’ve had your colours done, you will be aware of the many colour choices you can make.

It’s so much more fun choosing a colour than just going all black. My suggestion is, with something like a coat you may want to stick with the neutrals in your seasonal colour swatch to make the colour more versatile, to go with many more outfits.

Now I am not saying your yellow jacket won’t go with many things. It will. As long as it’s a yellow in your colour palette. But a beige in your colours will probably cater to more outfits

The right length

Your height will determine what length of jacket you can wear. Generally, the taller you are the longer the jacket you can wear. So if you are a tall slim build, you can almost wear a long jacket to your ankles.

If you are shorter best to choose a long jacket to just above the knee.

If you’re choosing a coat rather than a full length jacket, the taller you are the longer you can wear a short jacket as well.

Women with slimmer waists or the petite size women, can have a short jacket, like a Chanel cut that sits on the waist.

Width of lapels

 Broad lapels accentuate width. If you are broad chested, busty or have a fuller figure, opt for a slimline lapel.

Keep the look sleek and simple. If you are a slimmer person with narrow hips you can wear wider lapels or if you are very tall you can usually carry a wider lapel. If you have narrow shoulders you can balance the top part of your body with a wider lapel as well.

 Position of buttons

Double breasted buttons accentuate width so best to wear the jacket open if that is the case. If you are fuller in the waist avoid a button on the waist and go for a single breasted coat.

Side Pockets

Pockets draw attention to the area they are placed so consider if and where you would like to have pockets.

One more thing you may wish to consider is the fabric and the cut of the garment. You get what you pay for when it comes to something like a coat and jacket and this is probably where you need to spend a little more to get a great cut and fabulous fabric.

You can often see a lovely coat in the right colour and style, but inferior fabric will sometimes pill and lose it’s shape pretty quickly. Go for something special and it will be keeping you warm and stylish for many seasons to come.

How to apply your eyeshadows.

Create a crease with a soft brown like a number #93 eyeshadow, if you don’t already have a very deep set eye.

Use a lovely shimmery champagne colour under the brow

Use a nice light colour on the lid and extend higher to open the eye up.

If you want colour in the corner put a stripe of a really dark colour like #424 or #204 eyeshadow from the outer corner of the eye, half way up to the brow.

Blend your shadows in and up of course.

Shape your brow with the Cougar Brow Kit $37

Use a very sharp angle brush and the wax on the right and shape your brow accordingly.

Brush in with a mascara wand/brush

Brush some of the middle soft brown powder lightly over to set

Kohl

Use your kohl pencils like violet, brown, charcoal, dusty blue, emerald green (Never black)

As a tight line UNDERNEATH the top lashes.

And kick up in the corner and upwards.

Use your brow brush and wet with a little water if you want a very thin dark line along your top lashes and just touch the root on the lashes on top with a dark colour like #424 eyeshadow and make the top lashes stand out more.

Dressing YOUR Personality

I’m a great believer of being true to yourself. There is absolutely no point in dressing like someone else. You know the old saying. “be yourself everyone else is taken”

My very strong advice though, is always be yourself within your own colours.

If you choose outfits in the wrong colours you will not look like your “true self”

If you completely change the way you look but if it’s not congruent with your personality and who you are, you’ll never feel comfortable.

If you may make some major changes with your make over, it’s important to stay within your personality type.

Your Personality type

What’s your personality type? And how to dress accordingly.

We all have a dominant personality type so dressing to that really makes sense. There are a few obvious personalities to note.

The crazy sanguine, who is always the life of the party. The very quiet introverts, or the super conservatives and then there’s the all about business types.

Imagine a total introvert wearing large hats, big bold beautiful beads, outrageous colours and crazy make up.

You know the ones. It just wouldn’t go, would it?

Or a super extrovert looking like a school marm, dressed in uniform khaki’s, looking drab, dull and uninteresting. Oh I am not saying there’s anything wrong with being super introverted or that a super conservative needs to look dead, dull and boring. What I am saying is that every personality type can look amazing in styles that complement their personality.

7 Style personality types to consider.

There are many style personalities, I believe, but to make it simple and a round number let’s look at 7 different style types and see if you can see yourself in one, two or many.

Certainly there’s no reason for you to stick to one type. You can feel comfortable and look fabulous in a number of different style genres,

Elegant

The elegant dresser is effortlessly classy and beautiful. Elegant can cover a lot of styles and of course it is a little more dressy than a casual outfit. Elegant can be worn day or night and it’s wonderful to be described as someone that always looks elegant.

Aim for great fitting, lovely fabrics and a beautiful hang to the garment. Do you have to spend a million dollars? Not always. You can dress elegantly without spending big dollars, so be sure the garment is of reasonable quality. I must stress that it is always important to dress your personality strictly in the colours that are in your colour palette.

Your style always suffer if it is not in the right colours.

Classic

Classic is timeless style. Something that looks good in the 50’s or in modern times. We’ve all seen those vintage looks that we admire and wish we could see them in the shops today. Gorgeous, great lines and forever fashionable.

Sporty

Our body shape often dictates the sort of styles that suit us best. So obviously the sporty girl with a more athletic look is going to look great in a sporty type style. Comfortable, easy go anywhere style.

Dramatic

Dramatic comes with a punch. You will never overlook the dramatic dresser. Be careful in your attempts to look dramatic you may go for the wrong colours so be sure to work within your colour palette. Looking dramatic in the wrong colours can make you look garish and sometimes silly. Dramatic style lends itself to unusual cuts, bold prints, geometric prints, glamorous shoes, unusual accessories like interesting bags and shoes. Be bold with your colour mixes within your seasonal colours.

Boho

This feminine and flirty style is always current, always beautiful and can suit women of all ages. It’s just not for the young girls, so adjust the styles accordingly. Boho lends itself to pretty prints and laces and frills, gorgeous hats and lovely sandals. It is always a lovely summer choice.

Feminine

You can’t mistaken  the feminine style. Soft, floaty, womanly. The feminine style is not for everyone. Frills and lace may not suit you, your personality or even your body shape. This style really enhances the petite woman.

Chic

Chic is the cutting edge look. Usually worn by the confident sophisticate. Really goes well with expensive makes and cuts. Emulate this style in your own way but always aim to be chic, I always say. And don’t let age get in the way.

Well here are just a few style ideas for you to ponder. I think with fashion always aim to be more creative, more chic and more beautiful. Every woman has her own unique beauty and fashion is all about finding that and playing beautifully with it.

Time to cull your make up

How’s your make up stash? Have you a box full or multiple drawers of make up? Have you been collecting since the 80’s or are you someone that has a very small amount of make up?

Make up is like clothes

Make up is like clothes. You can only wear so much. If you have been hoarding the stuff for years, there will be drawers full of unhygienic matter, so maybe it’s time to cull.

Being organized and only carrying the right amount of anything is just a good idea, one that becomes more appealing to me as I grow older. So let’s get busy and cull our make up and get sorted in the make up department.

Ideally our make up should be a neat little package of the current cosmetics that are totally suited to us. Whenever I see my clients for a make up session or a personal stylist session, I always ask them to bring  all their make up along. That way we can determine together what is and what isn't helpful for them to wear.

What to throw away

The very first thing that must go is make up in the wrong colours. So many women say they have trouble getting the right foundation for example. So we find a foundation that’s perfect for them. It really is no use wearing the wrong make up just because you spent money on it.

Eyeshadows, lipsticks and blushes in the wrong colours have to go as well.

Black mascara and the wrong colour kohl pencils are not good to keep.

Any make up that’s over 2 years old, most definitely should be tossed out.

It will probably be going off.

They say we should even replace our mascara every 6 months. Putting the wand in and out and applying to our lashes can introduce little germs.

Old brushes are best to be replaced and brushes, make up bags and containers need a regular clean.

What make up do we need?

Make up of course is individual. Some women love make up and are very good at applying it and other women are completely lost when it comes to wearing make up.

As an Image consultant, my view is mature women need make up to cover aging signs and define those fading features, like brows and lips. We can have a more youthful look just by wearing our make up well.

Before and after-Make up in the right colours

Make up essentials.

Here is a little list of the make up basics that after the original outlay will not break the bank, because you’ll use every drop of each product.

1. Foundation-A great place to start. In the right colour of course, the right foundation can make you look years younger. YCS Cosmetics has foundation for ALL skin tones. It’s then just about choosing the formula you love to wear.

2. Concealer A must product for older clients as it hides the dark and aged skin tone. Also doubles as a lovely eye base as well. I use the #104 on all my clients.

3. Eyeshadows.Choose 1-5 in light, medium and darker shades in your colour palette of course. Mix and match and create your own eyeshadow look.

4. Kohl pencils 1 or 2 in your colours are ample. Use for tight lines, highlighting lids etc

5. Brown mascara. Is a must for mature eyes. So much softer and more appealing.

6. Lip pencils. Mature lips need to be defined and no better way than a lip pencil. A couple in darker shades and lighter shades to highlight your lipstick colours. You can also use lip pencils to create lots of lip colour ideas.

7. Lipsticks. My favourite so have as many as you like in your colours. Great for lip condition and YCS lipsticks are chock full of essential oils.

8. Powder-Powder is optional so go for a translucent powder or a neutral wet and dry powder to seal your foundation, remove shine or just act as a foundation on it’s own.

9. Blush or rose gold bronzer in your colours to lift cheeks, define and shine. It looks beautiful.

10 Brow kit. Our brows need colour and definition. They thin and go grey, so a brow kit does wonders.
